Sinaia is a town and a mountain resort in Prahova east-central Romania. It is located, about, 105 km north-northwest of Bucharest in the Prahova River valley, at the foot of Mount Furnica in the Bucegi Massif of the Transylvanian Alps.
In 1695 a knight, Mihai Cantacuzino, built a monastery there and named it Sinaia after a monastery on Mount Sinai in the Sinai Penisula. The name was passed on to the town, which developed rapidly after the arrival of a railway line in 1878.
King Carol I of Romania built his summer home, Peles Castle between 1873 and 1914. Peles Castle is the former summer residence of the Romanian royal family. It has a German Renaissance exterior and various interior architectural styles as well as a collection of paintings, furniture, and carpets. The neighboring Pelişor Palace has English-style landscaped gardens with exotic plants and conifers.
Sinaia is also a popular destination for its Ski Resort, hiking and winter sports. Among the tourist, landmarks are Peleș Castle, Pelisor Castle, Sinaia Monastery, Sinaia Casino and the Sinaia train station.
